AQB Students Abroad: Between Studying Genetics and Playing Music

By Christina Anastas,

My name is Christina Anastas from Bethlehem, Palestine, a Molecular Genetics student at Al-Quds Bard College. I got the opportunity to spend a semester abroad at Bard College in Annandale, Upstate New York. This experience was transformative in every way and has allowed me to grow both intellectually and personally.

I was interested in learning more about my field of study as a genetics student, and the genomics course I took at Bard fulfilled my goal. The course was really informative and pushed me to explore new concepts and techniques that improved my proficiency in the lab.

But my time at Bard wasn’t just limited to the classroom. As a trombonist, I was grateful to get accepted into the Bard Conservatory of Music, where I had the chance to study with some of the best musicians in the world. Participating in master classes with professional trombonists and playing with the Bard Conservatory Brass Section allowed me to connect with new friends and musicians who had amazing talent. Their passion and expertise inspired me to push my own boundaries as a musician. One of the most memorable and inspiring moments was playing with the Bard Conservatory Orchestra under the baton of maestro Tan Dun. His spirit and knowledge were truly magical, and being part of a group of musicians with such exceptional talent was enlightening.

For a young musician from Palestine, where opportunities like these are limited, this experience was incredibly meaningful. It reminded me of my own potential and the importance of nurturing my love for music, not just for myself, but for my community as well. Music has always been a source of comfort and self-expression for me, and being at Bard reinforced my belief that it is a powerful tool for healing. As a Palestinian, I witness the daily struggles and pain of my people, and I’m more dedicated than ever to using my musical talent to inspire others and to spread music as a form of therapy.
