Biology for Health Professions (0200101) 3 credit hours
Through the study of this introductory course, students will describe and integrate basic biological principles and define the major biological terms. Themes that will be covered in this course include scientific skills, the characteristics and classification of living things and how they differ from inanimate objects, chemical basis of life, cell structure and biology, the genetic basis of life, evolution, classification of organisms, and how cells form tissues, organs, systems and how these systems interact with each other as well as major human body systems.
First Aid and Patient Safety (0200201) 2 credit hours
Through the study of this course, students will learn how to respond appropriately to emergency situations. Themes that will be covered in this course include: breathing and cardiac emergencies; bleeding and injuries including soft tissues, muscle, bone and joint injuries; and head, neck and spinal injuries; sudden illness (bites/stings), and substance (abuse/misuse), accidents (traffic, water, burns), and patient safety principles.
Medical Ethics (0200202) 2 credit hours
Through the study of this course, students will describe, how ethical theory can illuminate problems in the health care system. Themes that will be covered in this course include basic ethical theories and concepts; making good medical/moral judgments for self and others; ethical regulation of medical research; and the current revolution in bioethical reasoning and methods in bioethics.
Biostatistics for Health Professions (0200301) 3 credit hours
Through the study of this course, students will learn statistical techniques applicable to Medical Sciences. It will be largely non-mathematical, concentrating on concepts rather than mathematical theory. Themes covered in this course include: descriptive statistics measures and their calculations: data representation through Tables and Graphs; descriptive statistics and Tables using SPSS; hypothesis testing and inferential statistics using SPSS.
Scientific Research for Health Professions (0200302) 3 credit hours
Through the study of this course, students will learn the foundational research knowledge and skills needed to perform evidence-based quantitative and qualitative research methods relevant to healthcare practitioners. Themes that will be covered in this course include introducing research process, development of research questions, data collection and sampling methods, research design, literature review and citation, the typical format of research article and proposal, the scientific research critique, and the PowerPoint presentation design. Health Accreditation (0200401) 2 credit hours
Through the study of this course, students will learn the theoretical basis for the accreditation of the quality program. It will provide an overview about the formal process of assessment and review by a relevant accrediting body leading to formal recognition that a program meets the standards required to ensure that graduates possess the competencies necessary to begin professional practice. The quality accreditation will signify that the quality certificate holder has completed a prescribed course of study designed specifically to meet predefined hospital requirements-and that your healthcare organization has met, and continues to meet.

The primary objective of the course is to provide the student with the basic concepts in chemical field, to develop basic chemical skills and understanding, to develop the students’ skills to solve quantitative problems. General chemistry is an elementary course that is especially designed and offered to health professionals in their first year. The course concentrate on the fundamental principles of chemistry, with emphasis on atomic structure, mole concepts, stoichiometry, chemical reactions in aqueous solution, acid- base equilibrium, thermodynamics, and chemical kinetics.
Anatomy and Physiology I (0201102) 3 Credit Hours
The aim of this course is to introduce the students to main types of tissues and the organic-systemic level of organization in human body. The concept of homeostasis and the contribution of body systems in maintaining homeostasis, frame of reference for anatomical studies and anatomical language (body regions and landmarks, planes and axis, and body cavities), epithelial tissue, connective tissue, integumentary system, osseous tissue, axial and appendicular skeleton, articulations, muscular tissue, nervous system including neural tissue, spinal cord and spinal nerves, brain and cranial nerves, somatic and autonomic nervous system, in addition to major senses including vision, hearing, smell, taste, and somatic sensation will be covered in this course. Basic Nursing I (0201103) 3 Credit Hours
This course is designed to prepare today’s students for challenges of tomorrow. Broad knowledge base is required to provide care to the whole person in both health and illness and in a variety of settings. This course is appropriate for building foundations for nursing practice, providing a knowledge- base for the development of nursing actions and skills and nurse client relationship as well as growth within the profession of nursing. Also, it helps student to learn, develop and become competent with fundamental knowledge of nursing most commonly required in bedside nursing through utilization of nursing process.
Basic Nursing I Clinical (0201104) 2 Credit Hours
This course is designed to first-year nursing students. This course enables the students to practice all necessary and required bedside nursing skills before going to hospital settings. Health Assessment (0201201) 2 Credit Hours
It is designed to provide student nurses with powerful tools to detect subtle, as well as obvious, changes in a client’s health. It introduces students to examination and techniques of adult physical assessment. Physical assessment enables students to assess patterns reflecting health problems and to evaluate the client’s condition and response affect the extent of examination. Health assessment and physical examination is a head-to-toe review of each body system that offers objective information about the client and allows student nurses to make clinical judgment. Anatomy and Physiology II (0201202) 3 Credit Hours
The study of Anatomy and Physiology II presents the structural and functional organization of the human body organs and systems. This course addresses body systems that are not covered in Anatomy and Physiology I, these systems are: The cardiovascular system, respiratory system, digestive system, urinary and reproductive systems. It explains the functional significance of organs and their relation to the physiologic, biochemical, and homeostasis mechanisms. Within each system, certain deviations from normal structure and function are considered briefly to establish a better basis for the understanding of health problems and to foster an appreciation for the complexity of the human body. Prerequisite: Anatomy and Physiology I 0200.
Basic Nursing II (0201203) 2 Credit Hours
Basic nursing II is designed for second-year nursing students and it is a continuity of Basic Nursing I. In this course many concepts and principles of nursing will be introduced. Nursing process is one of these concepts which is considered as the framework used to deal with each health problem. This course focuses on pre- and postoperative care, fluid/ electrolytes and acid base balance, infection prevention practices, nursing interventions of patient with hypoxia, patient with alteration in urinary and bowel elimination. Principles and guidelines of documentation will be used in all aspects of nursing assessment and interventions. Prerequisite: Basic Nursing I / Basic Nursing I Clinical
Basic Nursing II Clinical (0201204) 3 Credit Hours
This course is designed to allow students to implement their acquired nursing skills at the hospital settings. It exposes the students to situations in which they have to care for patients with different problems and diseases. Also, it allows students to show their competency in performing the required bedside nursing care. Prerequisite: Basic Nursing I/ Basic Nursing I Clinical and prerequisite or concurrent with Basic Nursing II.
Adult Nursing I (0201205) 3 Credit Hours
This course is designed to provide opportunity to analyze theories, concepts, research issues and trends in caring for adults with basic and commonly occurring health care needs. Content include internal and external environmental factors affecting the health of adults with basic and commonly occurring health care needs. Emphasis is on the role of professional nurse in health promotion and maintenance, illness care, and rehabilitation of adults. Prerequisite: Basic Nursing II / Basic Nursing II Clinical
Adult Nursing I Clinical (0201206) 3 Credit Hours
Clinical practice focuses on application of theories, concepts research issues and trends in caring for adults with basic and commonly occurring health care needs. Emphasis is on the role of professional nurse on the use of the nursing process with adults experiencing health problems and their families. Prerequisite or concurrent with Adult Nursing I.
Pharmacology (0201207) 3 Credit Hours
Pharmacology is a basic course for nursing students to study general mechanisms of drugs and chemicals action responsible for pharmacological or toxic effect, processes affecting the fate of drugs in the body. In this course, students will study general principle of pharmacology include pharmacokinetic and pharmacy dynamics. Some drugs and chemical that affect peripheral nervous system, cardiovascular system respiratory system, and blood will be discussed too. In addition, this course discusses drugs affecting Central Nervous system (CNS) depressions, Parkinson, anesthetics, and endocrine drugs as well as drugs and antibiotics. In this course students concentrate on nursing implications for drug.
Pathophysiology (0201208) 1 Credit Hour
This course relates manifestations of disease, risk factors for disease, and the principles of pathology underlying illness and injury to therapeutic nursing interventions and outcomes. Also, it will present a comprehensive and advanced review of cellular, organ system and whole- body physiology while simultaneously presenting the corresponding general pathophysiology of organ systems. The combined approach will allow the student to appreciate the mechanisms and manifestations of inflammation, cellular response, neoplastic formation as they relate to disease formation in the body. Prerequisite: Anatomy and physiology I
Microbiology (0201209) 3 Credit Hours (2 credit hours theory and 1 credit hour lab.)
The intention of this course is to present basic information, relevant to nursing practice, with the principles of microbiology and the nature of microbial disease. This course will give the nursing student a fundamental background of knowledge that will be applicable to the care of infectious patients, to the control of microbial diseases, and the normal flora of the body, and an understanding of microorganisms. The course will provide the student with an introduction to the sub disciplines of bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology. The laboratory will provide practice in aseptic techniques, the use of disinfectants and antimicrobial agents, and microscopic study of bacteria and other organisms. Prerequisite: Biology for Health Professions.
Care of the Sick and Healthy Child (0201301) 3 Credit Hours
The course is designed to provide a basic knowledge about the nursing care for the well child and the child with health problems, from infancy through adolescence. It focuses on prevention. promotion, maintenance, restoration and rehabilitation. The course aims to give the student an awareness of the effects of health and illness on the child and his family. In consideration to the genetic, familial and environmental factors that may affect the child health, with emphasis on the neonatal period and the high-risk newborn.
Care of the Sick and Healthy Child Clinical (0201302) 2 Credit Hours
The clinical experience provides the students with an opportunity to utilize the nursing process in providing holistic nursing care to healthy and sick children. It helps the students to develop their skills in caring for the child in various disease process, and to develop teaching and communication skills through direct contact with the child and the family. Selected government and private pediatric health care settings are used for student practice including centers and schools for physically and mentally retarded children. Prerequisite or concurrent with Care of the Sick and Healthy Child.
Oncology and Palliative Care (0201303) 2 Credit Hours
This course aims to provide the student with a better understanding of palliative care for a range of illness states but with an emphasis on cancer and the rationale for care. To enhance their professional development in this area of health, access to resources designed to support learning for all nurses caring for a dying person irrespective of their practice setting is explored. Prerequisite: Adult Nursing I
Introduction to Public Health and Epidemiology (0201304) 3 Credit Hours
This course is a basic requirement for preparing students to be able to enroll in the community health-nursing course. This course introduces the students to some of the principles and skills in public health as well as the major communicable diseases in the area. In addition, this course enables the students to be familiar with the basic concepts and models in epidemiology that can be used by community health nursing graduates in the practice of community health nursing in different settings.
Adult Nursing II (0201305) 2 Credit Hours
This course is a continuity of Adult Nursing I. It provides the students with opportunity to learn injury disease process and the appropriate nursing measures for provision of nursing care for adults and their families with complex multisystem health care needs. Emphasis is on the role of the professional nurse in health promotion and maintenance, illness care and rehabilitation of adults. Prerequisite: Adult Nursing I / Adult Nursing I Clinical
Adult Nursing II Clinical (0201306) 2 Credit Hours
This course focuses on applying nursing process as a critical thinking framework for identifying and meeting the needs of adults and their families with multisystem problems. Students will assess learning needs of adult patients and plan appropriate teaching and education according to his needs in relation to his health problem. They will apply communication principles with patients, health team and families. Students will continue to function in the provider of care role and begin to develop skills of manager role. Prerequisite: Prerequisite or concurrent with Adult Nursing II.
Maternal and Women’s Health (0201307) 3 Credit Hours
The course is designed to orient the student with specific women health issues by integrating cultural, psychosocial and biological aspects of the Palestinian women through their life cycle from adolescent to menopause. It will prepare the student to understand the childbearing process and to be able to provide the required care including the antenatal and postnatal care. In addition, complications of pregnancy, maternal and gynecological diseases that a woman might encounter during her life span will be discussed.
Maternal and Women’s Health Clinical (0201308) 2 Credit Hours
The clinical aspect of maternal and well women care will help the student nurse to develop assessment skills, and be able to provide maternal and gynecological nursing care through the utilization of the nursing process. The course enables the student to understand the role of the nurse as a member of the maternity health care team and become competent as a care provider in such settings. During their clinical practicum, students will go to different departments to become acquainted with different fields of maternal and gynecological needs of women. Prerequisite or concurrent with Maternal and Women’s Health.
Geriatric Nursing (0201309) 2 Credit Hours
The main goal of this course is to provide students with necessary knowledge related to aging process. The course discusses the aging theories and diseases affecting elders in the Palestinian society. The course presents the unique health care needs of the older adult and introduces students to nursing approaches to managing those needs. Ethical/ legal issues related to the nursing care of the older adults are explored.
Communication and Mental Health (0201310) 3 Credit Hours
This course is designed specifically for nursing students, and is directed toward helping them to build effective communication and counseling skills. This course will concentrate on communication process, skills, types and principles of brief counseling that is intended to improve mental health, emotional or behavioral issues in individuals. And is designed to enable the students to understand the concepts of mental health and illness, and to become familiar with measures that can enhance one’s mental health. It explains human behavior in health and illness, studies the development of human personality, and explains the coping process of the human being. In addition, the course discusses very common psychological and emotional conditions of people during crisis, abuse, death and dying, grief and stressful living circumstances.
Psychiatric Nursing (0201401) 3 Credit Hours
Psychiatric Nursing is a specialized area of nursing practice that employs theories of human behavior as its scientific aspect, and therapeutic use of self as its art. It is also concerned with a person’s emotional response to stress and crisis, and deals with the bio-psycho-social factors that may either enhance or inhibit an individual’s ability to cope with stress. The nursing process which emphasizes assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, and evaluating nursing care of psychiatric patients in the clinical training is the core of the course. Psychiatric Nursing Clinical (0201402) 2 Credit Hours
The purpose of this course is to prepare the nursing students to work with people who have been diagnosed as having a mental illness. The clinical practice provides nursing students with the ability to assess the mental and emotional statues of an individual and to be able to plan and implement relevant intervention with individual clients. After completion of the clinical practice the students will be able to assume responsibility for personal and professional growth through recognition of their own and others socio-cultural values, leadership therapeutic styles and learning behaviors. Prerequisite or concurrent with Psychiatric Nursing.
Critical Care Nursing (0201403) 4 Credit Hours
Advances in technology and medicine mean that increasing numbers of severely ill patients are surviving with a corresponding need for intensive nursing care. Critically ill patients are often managed in an intensive care unit within a hospital where sophisticated equipment is available to enable frequent monitoring of vital signs, assisted ventilation and, when life-threatening crises occur, and rapid resuscitation measures. This course focuses on the causes of single and multi-organ system dysfunction and the human responses to life threatening illness. Nursing care focused on restoring physiologic and psychological stability to the severely ill client will be explored. Core concepts of complex pathophysiology, current treatment modalities, and the role nurses perform when providing care to critically ill patients are discussed. Prerequisites: Adult Nursing I / Adult Nursing II
Critical Care Nursing Clinical (0201404) 3 Credit Hours
This course provides students with the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts learned to actual patient care situations with guidance from the clinical instructor. Clinical rotations held in intensive care units, a burn unit, operating room, emergency department and renal dialysis unit provide students with the context for experiential learning. Students are expected to work towards developing competency in each clinical area based on clearly defined parameters. Prerequisite or concurrent with Critical Care Nursing.
Health informatics (0201405) 2 Credit Hours
This course prepares the student to utilize informatics and health care technologies in the management of individuals, groups and organizations for the improvement of patient outcomes. In this course student will explore the use of informatics in nursing practice and its role in enhancing client care. Community Health Clinical (0201407) 2 Credit Hours
This course is designed to provide the student with the opportunity for clinical application of the theoretical course content. It focuses on the role of the nurse in community health: caring for aggregate populations at risk and the community as a whole. Nursing science and epidemiology provide the base for examining the spectrum of community health. Tools for community assessment and diagnosis as well as concepts of health promotion, disease prevention, risk reduction, rehabilitation, evidence-based practice and critical thinking skills for the health of groups are presented. Emphasis will be placed on inter-professional collaboration as well as collaboration with extant community groups. Prerequisite or concurrent with Community Health.
Leadership and Management (0201408) 2 Credit Hours
This course covers different concepts and issues in management and administration in nursing. The management process, leadership theories and leadership styles will be introduced. An overview of organizational structure in the health care agencies and the variables used in assessing an organization will be discussed. The aim of this course will be directed toward helping nursing students understand the responsibilities of a manager in nursing and how to best meet these responsibilities in the future to better serve the health care system as leaders in the future.
Leadership and Management Clinical (0201409) 2 Credit Hours
This course demonstrates leadership and management skills in developing students’ knowledge and skills in practicing different roles of managers in the hospitals to utilize good quality nursing care, conducting management project in relation to problem solving or need for change to a better situation, making operational plan and evaluation for managers in different clinical sites. The main aim of this course is to build leadership and management skills in nursing students as technical, conceptual and human skills to graduate transformational leaders who are creative, confident and powerful in the future for our society in clinical setting. Graduation Project (0201450) 1 Credit Hour
Through the study of this course, each group of five students perform a full scientific research on a topic related to Nursing Sciences. At the end of this course: students will prepare a scientifically written report outlining their research results and presents a lecture discussing the important topic related to their research work done throughout this course. The student chooses the topic with the help of the academic advisor making use of all available resources in Al-Quds University and other health institutions. Clinical Training (0201451) 2 Credit Hours
This training provides the nursing student with an additional 600 clinical hours in a variety of clinical settings as medical- surgical unit, pediatric and emergency units for the mastery of nursing skills under the guidance of the nursing staff where the student is assigned.
Comprehensive Exam (0201452) 0 Credit Hours
Comprehensive exam is given to all students who had successfully completed all courses of the academic plan both theory and clinical. The exam covers all department required courses. Passing the exam is a requirement for graduation.

This course deals with the basic psychological concepts, theories and the normal psychological functions of everyday human behavior. It also deals with the reasons why people’s behavior is as they do. The course aims at installing a realistic understanding of the student’s own behavior and how it is acquired, maintained and changed. Psychology helps students to develop an insight into the nature of man and suggests how psychological knowledge and procedures may be applied to situations of personal and social problems.

This course includes a scientific study and application of psychological principles for the purpose of understanding, preventing, and relieving all psychologically-related distresses and dysfunctions. This course focuses on the use of concepts from nursing, nutrition, pharmacology, and biopsychosocial sciences to critically examine the determinants of health, wellness and illness across the lifespan. Environmental, sociocultural and economic factors that influence health care practices are emphasized. Theories of health, wellness, and illness are related to health-promotion, disease-prevention, and illness-prevention nursing interventions.

This course is designed to provide the student with an insight into the psychological principles. The focus of this course is on instructional skills, teaching methodologies of lectures, discussions and presentations, and the application of theories of learning in the practice and teaching of nursing within the classroom, community and hospital settings. The basic assumption of this course is that the ability to teach is an acquired behavior and therefore, specific teaching skills can be isolated and practiced in the presence of the instructor and classmates for immediate feedback.

The Family Health course enables the student to focus on the holistic approach towards the Palestinian family. The aim of this course is to discuss the culture, needs problems that the families encounter and how to approach or intervene when necessary. The course is based upon the psychological and sociological theories that apply to family nursing.

This course will provide content of the psychosocial and environmental factors influencing nutritional habits and nutritional related illnesses. Nutrition requirements related to age, sex and activity will be included. The basic food groups and their nutritional values will be emphasized.

This course is designed to provide basic knowledge of the nursing care of individuals from conception, prenatal period through adolescence to middle age, old age and death. It presents a comprehensive survey of how children grow and develop and how they learn, think feel and act. The emphasis is on the application of biological, psychological and environmental factors affecting the adaptive capabilities of individual for achieving the tasks of each developmental stage.
Alternative Therapy (0201468) 2 Credit Hours
This course is designed to introduce students to different approaches and modalities of alternative therapies that are used all over the world. In addition, it will discuss the clinical application of these modalities and their effectiveness in promoting health. Therapies such as herbalism, body work, healing touch, acupuncture and aromatherapy will be investigated.

Clinical Training Unit
The clinical training unit has been established to ensure high level of educational quality and to facilitate the clinical training process of health care students. The aim is to confirm the accuracy of clinical practice, help the student find their way through various clinical settings, and attempt to clarify students’ responsibilities in the clinical training. This is achieved through high quality clinical training programs that emphasize on empowering the students with the required knowledge and skills to direct their practice in the clinical setting, in order to promote efficient and safe practical experience under the supervision of qualified, knowledgeable and skillful clinical instructors.
The clinical training unit of the Faculty of Health professions (FHP) at the Al-Quds University (AQU) aspires to become a leading and recognized academic institution at the national and international levels for quality education and training in health professions, research, and community service.
The clinical training unit of the FHP at the AQU prepares competent and safe professionals, through educational clinical programs that emphasize evidence-based practices; foster self-directed learning; encourage research and community services; promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and build professional leadership and commitment.
The overall goal of the clinical training is to prepare Nursing and Midwifery students for the skills and knowledge necessary to perform all the clinical tasks.
