Clinical Dentistry Residency in Prosthodontics
The purpose of Clinical Dentistry Residency in Prosthodontics is to provide the resident with advanced training in all aspects of Prosthodontics. The program is designed to fulfill the requirements of Palestinian Medical Council to enable the candidates to eligible for examination by the Palestinian Board of Prosthodontics Committee.
The program is structured to provide an education of taught courses and training for dentists who keen to hold the Palestinian Medical Council Certificate in Prosthodontics.
In the prosthodontics residency program, the preclinical and clinical parts are distinct phases aimed at providing comprehensive training in prosthetic dentistry.
1. Preclinical Part:
- Foundation Building: Preclinical training focuses on building a strong foundation in prosthodontics through practical learning and hands-on exercises.
- Basic Sciences: Residents study subjects like dental anatomy, occlusion, biomaterials to help understand the fundamentals of prosthodontics.
- Laboratory Work: Hands-on training in the laboratory involves practicing techniques for preparation and temporization of different types of indirect restorations, including crowns, bridges, veneers, inlays and onlays.
- Documentation and digital photography: Residents learn how to specifically document the cases they treat through digital photography and organizing all information gained through the treatment and save it.
- Presenting seminars: The residents will properly learn how present different topics in prosthodontics, summarize recent and classical articles and present case studies of their patients.
2. Clinical Part:
- Direct Patient Care: Clinical training involves working directly with patients under the supervision of experienced prosthodontists.
- Treatment Planning: Residents learn to develop comprehensive treatment plans based on patient needs, oral health status, and esthetic considerations.
- Prosthodontic Procedures: Residents perform a wide range of prosthodontic procedures, such as crown and bridge preparations, complete and partial denture fabrication, implant placement and restoration, and esthetic enhancements.
- Complex Cases: Residents gain experience in managing complex cases, including full-mouth rehabilitation, temporomandibular joint disorders, maxillofacial prosthetics, and dental implant complications.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Collaboration with other dental specialties such as oral surgery, periodontics, orthodontics, and endodontics may be emphasized to provide comprehensive care for patients with complex needs.
- Dental Laboratory Rotations: All residents must do a rotation inside the dental laboratory alongside the dental technician to learn different techniques on how to fabricate the prosthetics.
Overall, the preclinical part lays the groundwork for understanding prosthodontic principles and techniques, while the clinical part focuses on applying this knowledge in a real-world clinical setting to provide effective and comprehensive care to patients.
At the end of this program, the candidate resident will:
- Be able to competent in all aspects of clinical advanced fixed and removable prosthodontics and has the knowledge to execute complicated prosthodontics treatments.
- Will have the basis for scientific evidence-base inquiry, critical thinking and problem solving.
- Bridge the gap between Evidence Based Practice and Clinical Practice in Prosthodontics.
- Be able to have an advanced level of clinical knowledge and skills of Prosthodontics.
- Have sufficient knowledge and clinical experiences to become proficient in diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment sequencing for complicated cases of fixed and removable prosthodontics cases.
- Learn the principles of research methodology, design, research protocol development, biostatistics, and analysis.
- Be able to be eligible for the Palestinian Medical Council Certificate Examinations.
Prosthodontist is the suitable member of the dental team to provide the dental patients with restorations in form of function, and esthetics needs. The scope of treatment required for the patients will range simple procedure to complex full mouth rehabilitation. The candidate in this program will fulfill the following aspects:
- Understanding of basic dental sciences.
- Sufficient knowledge of recent literature.
- Rapport and proper patent- dentist communication skills.
- Effective utilization of dental auxiliaries to provide proper time.
- Treatment planning and good treatment skills for patients seeking complete dentures, removable partial dentures, fixed partial dentures, maxillofacial prosthetics, and implant prosthodontics and complex rehabilitation.
