Residency in Orthodontics
The residency program in orthodontics consists of three consecutive years based on a full-time attendance program, it incorporates pre-clinical and clinical training at the level of specialist trainee in orthodontics, in addition to an appropriate preparation of the candidates to sit for the Palestinian Board exam, upon successful completion of all the needed requirements.
Candidates are exposed thoroughly to Diagnosis, prevention, interception, correction of mal-positioned teeth and jaws, in the sagittal, vertical and transverse planes. It also addresses the modification of facial growth, known as dentofacial orthopedics, along with the experience of patient care and ethics.
The program is based upon two phases:
Phase one: consists of a pre-clinical and laboratory teaching element, in conjunction with basic medical sciences and relevant dental sciences, this module course helps building up a core of knowledge of normal and abnormal craniofacial growth and development of the dentition and its surrounding tissues. The duration of this phase is about 4 – 6 months period.
Phase two is build up upon, clinical and non-clinical tutorials seminars, self-directed learning, supervised clinical treatment of patients under staff supervision and attendance of case presentation seminars for the new and follow up patients.
Assessment through the three years is conducted through written, oral and practical examinations, in addition to clinical – laboratory work-based assessments, case presentation, and patient logbooks.
Assessments are held once per semester.
The goals of the residency Orthodontic program is to enable the resident to:
- Develop contemporary knowledge, specifically in understanding the principles of normal and abnormal facial growth and relevant occlusion enabling the residents to make appropriate clinical decisions and treatment plans.
- Develop a high-level of orthodontic clinical skills in treating patients weather they were suffering from a skeletal discrepancy or dental malocclusion.
- Acquire basic and advance skills in patient care, investigation techniques.
- Participate in a multidisciplinary teamwork for effective patient care.
- Develop and adopt high values in decision making, with contemporary evidence-based knowledge and skills.
- Communicate efficiently, and practice the highest level of ethics and professionalism thus providing utmost care and safety to the community.
- Eligible to sit for the Palestinian Orthodontic Board Examination
- Analyze and evaluate comprehensive diagnostic findings and propose treatment plans in the highly specialized field of orthodontics.
- Construct and compile appropriate, high quality patient records and utilizing best practice in orthodontic treatment.
- Apply advanced knowledge of periodontal physiology related to tooth movement and the histopathological consequences in the design and implementation of comprehensive orthodontic treatment.
- Propose an appropriate treatment plan in a multi-disciplinary approach based on a team work effort.
- Ability to publish a paper related to orthodontics which employs advanced skills in scientific research including research objectives, literature review, methodology, analysis, conclusions, and recommendations.
